If you're setting up IPTV for the first time, one of the first questions is whether to use a Firestick (or other external streaming device) or to configure IPTV directly on your Smart TV. Both are possible, but they differ in important ways.
App availability

Smart TV: App availability varies significantly by brand and model year. Performance
Firestick: A modern Firestick — particularly the 4K Max (Newest gen) or Fire TV Cube — has a processor specifically designed for media streaming. IPTV apps run smoothly, channel switching is fast and large playlists load without issues.
Smart TV: Smart TV processors are often less powerful than dedicated streaming devices and can struggle with large IPTV channel lists, resulting in slower menus and less responsive EPG browsing. Higher-end TVs (OLED Samsung, LG OLED) are generally more capable, but mid-range Smart TVs often perform poorly with feature-heavy IPTV apps.
Winner: Firestick. More predictable and generally faster performance, particularly with large IPTV playlists.
Updates and longevity
Firestick: Amazon updates Fire TV software regularly and the IPTV apps on the Appstore are updated independently of the device. A Firestick bought today will receive software support for several years. If your TV becomes outdated, you can move the Firestick to a new TV.
Smart TV: TV manufacturers typically provide software updates for 4–7 years after a model's release. After that, the app ecosystem can stagnate — older TV operating systems may no longer support current IPTV app versions.
Winner: Firestick. More portable and its software ecosystem is more actively maintained.
Setup and ease of use
Firestick: Plug in, connect to Wi-Fi, install the IPTV app from the Appstore, enter credentials. Setup takes around 10 minutes and is the same process regardless of which TV you own.
Smart TV: Setup varies by brand and model. On Samsung, you download Smart IPTV from the app store and enter your M3U URL or Xtream Codes. On LG, the process is similar but the apps available differ. Older models may require a workaround or a different app.
Winner: Firestick. More consistent, well-documented setup process.
Cost
A Firestick adds cost — from £39.99 for the HD model. Smart TVs already built into your television cost nothing extra. However, if your Smart TV doesn't support good IPTV apps (which is common on older or budget models), the Firestick is the only viable option without buying a new TV.

Recommendation
For most people, a Firestick is the better IPTV platform. The app availability is more reliable, performance is consistently better and the setup process is the same on any TV. The Fire TV Stick 4K Plus or 4K Max are the right choices for a main TV IPTV setup.
If your Smart TV is a recent high-end model with a well-stocked app store, it's worth checking whether IPTV Smarters or Smart IPTV is available on it before buying a Firestick.
